Are 3D-Printed Ammo Cases Any Good? PLA vs PETG vs Molded Plastic

Short answer: 3D-printed ammo cases are excellent for organized storage because every pocket can be sized to your exact rounds and magazines. PLA is rigid and accurate but softens around 130-140°F (55-60°C), so keep it out of hot cars; PETG handles heat better. Printed walls are not airtight, so for humid long-term storage put the case inside a sealed container with desiccant.

What 3D printing does well

  • Exact fit. Molded boxes come in a few fixed layouts. A printed case is laid out around your mix: 100 rounds of 9mm, four Glock magazines and a mag loader in one case, sized to the millimetre.
  • Mixed calibers. Shorter rounds sit on raised floors so everything stands at the same height.
  • Made to order. Nothing sits in a warehouse; your case is printed for you.

Material comparison

Material Softens around Strengths Watch out for
PLA 130-140°F (55-60°C) Rigid, crisp detail, accurate fit Hot cars and direct summer sun
PETG about 175°F (80°C) Tougher, more heat tolerant Slightly less crisp detail
ABS / ASA 200°F+ (95-105°C) Heat and UV resistant Harder to print well
Molded polypropylene high Cheap at volume, flexible Fixed layouts, loose fit

Are printed cases waterproof?

No. A printed case closes neatly, but it is not a gasketed seal. For a basement, a boat or long-term storage in a humid climate, keep the case inside a sealed can or tote with silica gel. Indoors in a closet or safe, the case alone is fine.

How strong is a printed case?

Our cases use solid outer walls and floors, with webs between pockets. They are built for storage and carrying, not for being stood on or thrown in a truck bed.

What we use

BrassGrid cases are printed in PLA in a range of colors, with an optional second color for the lid marking. Keep them indoors and out of hot cars and they will last. Start in the case builder.

Frequently asked questions

Will a PLA ammo case melt in a car?

It can deform. PLA softens around 130-140°F (55-60°C) and a parked car in summer can get hotter, so do not leave it in a car.

Is PETG better than PLA for ammo boxes?

PETG tolerates more heat (about 80°C) and is tougher; PLA is stiffer and prints finer detail. For indoor storage both work.

Are 3D-printed ammo cases airtight?

No. They close neatly but are not sealed; use a gasketed container with desiccant for humid long-term storage.

Why buy a printed case instead of a molded box?

Fit. A printed case is laid out around your exact rounds, magazines and gear instead of a fixed generic layout.

How long do 3D-printed cases last?

Kept indoors and out of heat, a solid-walled PLA case lasts for years of normal use.
